More than coffee. A journey.

Started with a trailer, shaped by a pandemic, built by a community. This is Mulatto.

Juan, Mulatto Coffee founder
Where it started

A trailer, a plan, and an entire continent.

After years working inside a well-connected coffee company in Sydney, Juan knew he'd learned what he came to learn. He'd seen the industry from the inside — the sourcing, the relationships, the business of it all. But somewhere along the way, the thing that drew him to coffee in the first place — the connection, the craft, the people — had stopped being the point.

So he bought a coffee trailer. The plan was simple: drive around Australia, brew coffee for people, see the country. One espresso at a time, from coast to coast.

He made it exactly one week before COVID shut everything down.

"I came back to Sydney thinking it would be for a few weeks. The community in Manly had other plans — and honestly, so did I."

What was supposed to be a temporary stop became something permanent. The Queenscliff Lagoon coffee park became the home of Mulatto — and the community that gathered around that trailer became the reason to stay.

The story continues

One stayed. One kept moving.

The original Mulatto trailer put down roots in Manly — not by accident, but because the people there earned it. So Juan did something a little unusual: he bought a second van, named her Mulatta, and picked up where the original plan left off.

For eight months, Mulatta travelled Australia — brewing coffee in towns big and small, carrying the Mulatto story wherever the road went. Meanwhile, back in Manly, the original trailer kept showing up every morning.

Today, Mulatto Manly is the flagship. The place where you can walk in, taste the coffee, hear the story, and feel what this brand is actually about. Coffee, culture, and a bit of Colombian warmth on the Northern Beaches.

The roots

Grown in Colombia. Shaped by it, too.

Juan grew up between Bogotá and Quindío — one of Colombia's many celebrated coffee-growing regions. His family has been in the coffee business for generations. As a kid, he didn't just learn about coffee. He saw where it came from, who grew it, and how hard they worked for it.

He watched farmers pour everything into their harvest — and came to understand how much of the coffee world operates without a full picture of what that effort actually looks like on the ground. The further the coffee travels from its origin, the easier it is to lose the story behind it.

That stayed with him. It still does.

Why Mulatto exists

Bridging two sides of the same story.

Colombia grows some of the world's finest coffee. Australia drinks it with real passion and expertise. But the two ends of that chain would benefit enormously from understanding each other better — sharing knowledge, context, and perspective about what happens on both sides.

Mulatto exists to help build that understanding — not with slogans, but with real relationships. Between the farmers who grow the coffee and the people who drink it. Between Colombian expertise in production and Australian expertise in craft and consumption.

The goal isn't just to sell great coffee. It's to build a bridge — so that the people at both ends of the chain understand each other better, make better decisions, and eventually share more fairly in the value of what they create together.

One cup at a time. Starting in Manly.

The people

Mulatto isn't one person.

Five years in, and every single chapter has had people in it who made it better, bigger, and more worth doing. This is for them.
